Cuticle-aligned hair is considered the finest quality in hair extensions. It refers to the careful collection and processing of hair strands to ensure that all cuticles—the outermost layer of the hair shaft—are preserved and aligned in the same direction.
Just like natural hair grows from root to tip, cuticle-aligned Remy hair is collected from single donors, and processed in a way that preserves that natural root-to-tip alignment.
Determining your natural hair type involves assessing the pattern and texture of your hair without any products or styling. Here's a brief breakdown:
Type 1 (Straight)
1a: Very straight and fine hair. It doesn't hold curls well.
1b: Straight but with a bit more body and volume. Might have slight bends at the ends.
1c: Straight with a slight wave, especially towards the ends.
Type 2 (Wavy)
2a: Slight, loose, undefined waves. The hair tends to be fine.
2b: More defined waves that might resemble an 'S' shape. This type can get frizzy.
2c: Clearly defined waves or loose curls. This type often has a mix of different textures.
Type 3 (Curly)
3a: Big, loose curls, about the size of sidewalk chalk.
3b: Bouncy, springy curls about the size of a marker. Hair can have a combination of textures.
3c: Tight, corkscrew-like curls, often the size of a pencil or straw.
Type 4 (Coily)
4a: Well-defined, springy, tight coils about the size of a crochet needle. Has an "S" pattern.
4b: Z-shaped pattern with less defined coils. Hair bends in sharp angles.
4c: Very tight coils, often with a zig-zag pattern. This type can shrink more than 75% of its length.
To accurately determine your type, wash your hair and let it air dry without applying any products. Then, compare its natural state to the descriptions above. Keep in mind, it's common to have a mix of different types on one head of hair.
Yaki hair is designed to mimic the texture of Afro-textured hair that has been relaxed or straightened. It is characterized by its coarse texture, which provides a natural look that closely resembles the pattern of many individuals of African descent.
Yaki hair extensions are most compatible with individuals who have type 3 (curly) to type 4 (coily/kinky) natural hair. These hair types, when straightened or relaxed, closely resemble the Yaki texture, making the blend between the extensions and natural hair seamless.
While Yaki hair is designed to resemble Afro-textured hair, individuals with looser curls or straight hair can still use it. However, they might need to employ methods like texturizing or using heat to ensure their natural hair blends seamlessly with the Yaki extensions.
Kinky Straight hair, often referred to as a "blow-out texture," is designed to mimic Afro-textured hair that's been blow-dried straight. It retains some of its natural coarseness and texture, making it appear more voluminous and authentic than purely straight hair.
Kinky Straight hair is most compatible with individuals who have type 4 (coily/kinky) natural hair. When this hair type is blow-dried, it closely resembles the Kinky Straight texture, ensuring a seamless blend between natural hair and extensions. Individuals with type 3 (curly) hair can use Kinky Straight extensions. However, to achieve the best blend, they might need to blow-dry or slightly straighten their natural hair so that it aligns more closely with the Kinky Straight texture.
Straight Remy hair refers to hair extensions where all the cuticles are intact and aligned in the same direction, from root to tip. This ensures minimal tangling and a natural, smooth appearance. The "straight" descriptor indicates the hair's texture, which is sleek and straight.
Straight Remy hair is most compatible with individuals who naturally have type 1 (straight) to type 2 (wavy) hair. This is because the texture of Straight Remy hair seamlessly integrates with these hair types without requiring extensive styling or manipulation.
Individuals with curly or coily hair can use Straight Remy weaves. However, to achieve a seamless blend, they would typically need to straighten their natural hair to match the straight texture of the extensions. It's crucial to use heat protectants to minimize potential heat damage.
Each type of Remy hair extension has its unique storage needs:
Clip-in: Brush them gently to remove any tangles, then lay them flat in their original packaging or a silk or satin storage bag. This ensures they remain tangle-free.
Hand Weft & Machine Weft: These should be coiled loosely and stored in a breathable cotton bag. Ensure they're free of any tangles before storing.
Ktips: Store them in their original container, ensuring they're aligned in the same direction. If the original container isn't available, lay them flat in a storage box separated by parchment paper to avoid tangling.
Tape-in: It's crucial to ensure the adhesive side doesn't come into contact with anything that could degrade its stickiness. Place a piece of parchment or wax paper between each tape section and store them flat in a box.
For all Remy hair types, store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight to maintain color and quality. Always ensure they are clean and completely dry before storing to prevent mold and odors.
